From our CDL school to the open highway, Lamont Fields is an example of what it means to follow a dream – no matter how long it takes to get there. A recent graduate of United Truck Driving School, Lamont is now a CDL driver for Melton trucking. Lamont’s story shows that you can reach your goals with hard work and determination
Before Lamont ever stepped into a big rig, he spent more than 20 years in a completely different field.
“I was a shift lead at a chef’s designer clothing company, and I did that for 22 and a half years,” Lamont shared. “I asked the owner if I could go back to school. When he asked what kind, I told him I wanted to go to CDL school. He made it happen for me.”
That decision opened a new chapter for Fields. Backed by the support of his employer, he stepped into the driver’s seat at our CDL school, both figuratively and literally!
Lamont’s interest in trucking didn’t come out of nowhere, though. It came from a place that is nostalgic for him – his childhood.
“This was something that interested me since I was a kid, he said with a laugh. “And you’ll laugh when I say this – since the old TV sitcom BJ & the Bear and the movie Over the Top – but I didn’t think it was going to happen!”
But it did happen. Lamont took the leap, and the dream became a reality.
The CDL Training that Made the Difference
Lamont’s journey through United made a lasting impact. Throughout his CDL training with us, he found that he had nothing but kind words for each person he worked with.
“Everything was excellent at United, to be honest with you. The teachers were good in the classroom and were very helpful.” Lamont recalled. “I even loved the owner – she was very helpful. Everyone was great!”
The community and mentorship helped him gain the skills and confidence to move forward in his career
Now, Lamont is doing exactly what he dreamed of – cruising highways and continuing to grow his career as a flat bed truck driver with Melton Truck Lines, one of our awesome partners. Every mile he drives in his rig is because of the determination and hard work that he put in to getting his CDL.
