Staying In Touch As An OTR Truck Driver

How to keep in contact while you're on the road!

You love your work as a professional over-the-road (OTR) driver, and you love your family. When your work takes you away from home for days or weeks it can be easy to lose touch with those you love. Luckily for modern-day truckers, technology makes staying in contact easier than ever before!

Video Chat Apps

Talking on the phone is nice but there’s nothing quite like actually being able to see your loved ones while you talk. Seeing their expressions and being able to show rather than tell will help you feel more connected. Technology helps make this possible through video chat apps!

You can video chat through apps like Facebook, Skype, or Google Duo. There are tons of video chat apps to choose from. Find what works best for you and make sure those you love have access before you hit the road!

Scheduled One-On-One Time

It is not uncommon for parents to have regular one-on-one time with each individual child. It’s nice to schedule the time to do something special, just for them. It could be to simply set aside an hour each week to discuss what’s going on in their lives. Or enjoy a meal together, maybe at their favorite restaurant.

The video chat apps discussed above can help you keep up with you’re scheduled one-on-one time! There’s nothing like time for just the two of you to talk and share what’s on your mind. Pick a scheduled time, whether it be weekly or every two weeks, and stick with it!

Keep An Ongoing Group Message

Having an ongoing group message is a great way for truck drivers to stay in touch when they’re OTR. It could be in a group text message or even a group chat in Facebook messenger. The nice thing about having an ongoing message is that you won’t have to worry about arranging around peoples schedules.

Having an ongoing message is another great way to stay in touch, between calls or video chats. Share pictures of your travels, drop in to say “hi, I love you!”, or anything else on your mind!

Send Snail Mail

Don’t you love getting cards in the mail? So will your loved ones! With the rise of technology, we’ve gotten away from sending snail-mail. That’s why it feels so special when you get something in the mail from a loved one.

Most truck stops carry postcards and stamps so you can even send ones specific to where you’re visiting. Or a nice greeting card to let them know you’re thinking of them. Don’t forget birthdays and other special events!
