Studies have shown that truck drivers typically have more health problems than those in other careers. This can be one of the greatest challenges to being a truck driver. Truck drivers aren’t able to get as much exercise as others and, also work in small spaces that expose them to hazardous diesel fumes.

Although the life of a truck driver can have health risks associated with it, there are steps that can be taken in order to remain healthy.

Drink plenty of water – Staying hydrated is very important while driving. Dehydration can cause many health problems. Keeping a container of water with you at all times can help.

Eat a diet that includes many fruits and vegetables – Fruits and vegetables can give your body energy and the vitamins and minerals that it needs.  These vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber can help prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancers.

Reduce the amount of junk food eaten – Foods high in fat and empty calories can contribute to arteries becoming clogged and other health problems. There are healthy alternatives to junk food that truck drivers can find at any rest stop. Some examples are; nuts, jerky, whole grain crackers, and fruits.

Get enough sleep – We all know that doctors and health professionals recommend 8 hours of sleep each night.  This advice is true for truck drivers as well. Sleep rejuvenates the body and keeps the mind at it’s best.

Find time to relax – It is important that even when on the road to do something that you like. Make time to incorporate some of your hobbies into the downtime that you have. Take vacation when allowed to spend time with family and friends.
